PAST
AUI Contractors was founded in 1983 as Architectural Utilities in Fort Worth, Texas, by Jerry Roberts. He began working in the construction industry in the 1960s and held several leadership positions with the Association of General Contractors (AGC), including the presidency of the Fort Worth Chapter twice. He is an alumni of Texas A&M University. Roberts maintains an office at AUI and serves as an advisor to the senior management team.
Doug Alumbaugh and Glenn Strother, who are now the President and Executive Vice President of AUI, have been involved with the company since its inception and, along with Roberts, were two of the three original employees of the company. Alumbaugh and Strother started buying company stock in 1997 and completed a formal buyout from Jerry Roberts in September 1999.
The company began doing business as AUI General Contractors in 1996 and in January of 2001, the corporate name formally changed to AUI Contractors.
In the early 1980s, the company focused on civil projects that included parks, zoos, and athletic and recreational facilities.
In the mid eighties, AUI began to construct commercial buildings and engage in underground utilities projects.
In the late 1980s, AUI weathered and survived an economic downturn that depressed the real estate and construction industry sectors. When the economy began to improve in the mid-1990s, AUI’s business likewise improved and expanded. During that time, the company generated most of its revenue through hard bids for public sector projects. By the late 1990s and in early 2000, AUI began to reap the benefits of the economic rebound with revenues approaching 100M and started to complete individual projects worth over 110M.
Although the U.S. economy once again slowed down in 2000 and in 2001 due to declines in the stock market and 9/11 terrorists attacks, AUI remained in a strong position with a significant backlog of projects. The company proved to be resilient, flexible, and able to shift easily between the public and private sectors. Construction volume began to increase significantly between 2004 and 2005.
